Integrating AI Suggestions

My client and I leveraged AI-powered tools in the design process to streamline workflows, accelerate ideation, and enhance user research.

✨ GeminiAI helped us formulate research questions 50% faster. We used GeminiAI to generate diverse questions and then refined them further based on research objectives. This allowed us to spend more time on ideal participant recruitment.

✨ ClaudeAI helped us open our mind to 10+ possible design solutions. When we hit a creative block, ClaudeAI suggested alternative approaches. We evaluated each suggestion based on user needs and technical constraints.

✨ MazeAI helped us finish usability study creation and reporting 2 days early. We evaluated the AI-generated study for potential biases and tweaked it to fit our research goals. This approach saved us time and we finished the project sooner than expected!

The Problem

Mental health counselors must go through a strenuous licensure process in order to become licensed professionals. My client's business plan is to create a website and accompanying app that serves as a one-stop-shop for all the needs and resources to support those going through the licensure process.

Problem Statement

Prelicensed mental health counselors need support and convenient access to licensure resources in order to be well-informed throughout the licensure process.

Building Empathy

Interviews

To get a better understanding of what the users' needs and desires were, I interviewed 6 mental health counselors. The participants were at all stages of the licensure process.

Research Questions (Drafted using GeminiAI)

Questions were generated and refined using Gemini AI to ensure clarity and coverage of key user pain points.

  • What are your current tasks as a prelicensed professional?

  • Tell me about a time you found challenging during the licensure process.

  • What kind of support or tools would have made the process easier?

Ideation

How Might We's

The interviews revealed many user pain points but not an obvious solution. To move forward, the client and I collaborated on a series of "How Might We" questions, which helped us refine our focus and narrow down our scope.

⚠️ Problem

💡 How Might We…

Users feel alone in the licensure process.

Make users feel more supported during the licensure process?

Users don't know what they don't know.

Make info easier to find when users don't know what they are looking for?

Users feel unprepared after getting their license.

Make users feel more prepared when finishing up the licensure process?

Current resources about licensure are scattered.

Help users efficiently find info and tips?

Crazy 8's (Inspired by ClaudeAI)

The client and I had a brainstorming session using ClaudeAI and the Crazy 8's method. We prompted Claude with the pain points and "How Might We's" to help inspire us on possible solutions. Claude proposed a number of solutions including a resource hub, progress tracker, and peer connection platform. We then quickly sketched 8 distinct ideas covering those topics as well as other ideas we had.

Card Sorting

After Crazy 8's, we narrowed down the topics the new app would feature. We grouped the topics which resulted in three major categories.

Usability Testing (Powered by AI)

After ideating, I created a Figma prototype and conducted a usability test through Maze, an online remote testing platform. Maze also helped me quickly draft a usability script that I followed to ensure consistency and reduce any potential bias. In the usability test, I asked 7 counselors to complete tasks and asked for their feedback.

Usability Tasks
  • From the discussion page, how would you reply to the post?

  • How would you navigate to the FAQs about getting started?

  • How would you navigate to the "Ways to Track Your Hours" resource?

Insights

MazeAI quickly identified common themes and patterns. This sped up analysis significantly. Maze also generated a report in an easily digestible format which helped me effectively communicate findings to my client.

  • 86% were able to complete all tasks

  • 86% found the app easy to use

  • 70% would use the app frequently

Key Design Moments

To make sure I wasn't straying away from the initial purpose, I made sure my initial wireframes addressed the "How Might We's."

Lessons Learned

  • AI is best used as a supporting tool- Although the AI-tools I used accelerated ideation and research workflows, I also remained cautious by verifying findings and using it to inspire rather than copy.

  • Rephrasing interview questions - Sometimes, reframing questions helped elicit deeper insights from users.

  • Summarizing strategy - During the interviews, some participants talked for a long time. I adapted by summarizing their thoughts and repeating it back to them to make sure I was understanding.

  • Ideating with the client can be helpful- The client had a really long wish list. I helped her narrow down the scope into something achievable by using methods like Crazy 8's and How Might We's.

Next Steps

  • Test high-fidelity prototype with mental health counselors.

  • Develop this prototype into a working website.

  • Send out voluntary surveys to users to gather user experience feedback.
